June 2010 Cottage of the Month

Where is your home located, and how long have you lived there?

We live in the middle of Michigan. We bought our home in 2000 and after 4 years of living here, made the decision to transform our tiny bungalow into our dream home.

What is your favorite decorating style?

My favorite decorating style is relaxed, cottage style. I love the idea of mixing old with new and creating a space over time.

Where do you get your decorating influence from the most?

My decorating influences are from a wide range of sources. I have several favorite designers... Atlanta Bartlett and Christina Strutt are among my very favorites. Magazines, blogs and every day life also play an enormous part in my style. Most everything in my home has a story. I have to fall in love with something in order to decorate with it. If I do fall in love with something, it may spark an entire project.

In 5 words or less, your home is?

Relaxed. Peaceful. Comfy. Ours.

What is your favorite store or flea market to shop at?

The Iron Grate in Fenton, Michigan. This shop is full of things I love!

Share one of your favorite decorating tricks or ideas:

Anything no-sew or little-sew is a favorite on my book! It is amazing what velcro can do! I recently fashioned a new skirt for my husband's desk using fabric, a few stitches and a lot of velcro. He loves it!

Your favorite paint color, name and brand:

My favorite paint color is my master bedroom color. Palladian Blue by Benjamin Moore.

What are your favorite things to collect right now?

I have been collecting sea shells for a while now. I love anything that has to do with the lake. Recently I picked up a pair of old oars. They remind me of my days growing up on the water. One of my favorite thing to do as a little girl was to load up my fishing pole in our rowboat and spend some time in the Great Outdoors.

What is your favorite room in your house, and why?

My favorite room is our master bedroom. I love waking up to the sunlight streaming through the curtains. Our girls come into our room every morning and it usually takes about an hour or so before any of us leaves the bed. We curl up, read books and snuggle almost every morning during the summer.

Your next project is:

Landscaping around our master bedroom porch. I just purchased 3 new English Rose bushes.
