Cottage of the Month January 2011
This month we're touring Shelley's charming home in Winter Park, Florida...
Where is your home located, and how long have you lived there?
Winter Park, FL. We bought our home in 1995.
What is your favorite decorating style?
My favorite style is what I call collected style. As an antiques dealer I get first dibs on great finds. I love French farmhouse with a touch of cottage style here and there. I love to mix really rustic with really pretty. As you can see I don't use color in my decor. That has slowly evolved over the years. I stick to a palette of white, cream, brown and touches of black. Occasionally I paint a piece of furniture if the lines are right but the finish isn't, but the majority of my antiques are the original chippy finish.
Where do you get your decorating influence from the most?
I get a lot of inspiration at Marburger, the antique show I sell at twice yearly in Texas. I love magazines and decor books, my favorites being the Jeanne d' Arc Living magazines. And the blogging world is a treasure trove of inspiration.
In 5 words or less, your home is?
Cozy, comfortable, collected, peaceful, evolving.
What is your favorite store or flea market to shop at?
My favorite flea market is the antiques week experience in Texas, especially our show Marburger Farms. I love Anthropologie, Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware.
Share one of your favorite decorating tricks or ideas:
My favorite decorating trick lately is painting an entire wall in the kitchen in chalkboard paint. It was a bold move, but it gave the room so much personality.
Your favorite paint color, name and brand:
We have used a color called Latte from Restoration Hardware in much of the house. It's a very soft neutral that looks great with white moulding. I love the chocolate brown from Ralph Lauren in the master and guest bedrooms. Sorry I don't remember the color names of those.
What are your favorite things to collect right now?
Brown transferware, ironstone that has mottled and turned brown, old mirrors that are ghosting, french nightgowns and mercury glass.
What is your favorite room in your house, and why?
That's a tough one really. I guess if I had to pick one it would be the master bedroom. It's very cocoon-like with the chocolate brown walls and I love my bedding that is just the right amount of feminine. I think it's a sexy room if you will.
Your next project is:
My hubs is going to build a window seat in the living room for me. Can't wait to fill it with some fabulous pillows.
