Cottage8: Our Winter Mantel

We’ve decided we’re decorating a bit lighter for the holidays this year. But I always love to play around with our mantel each season, so I couldn’t resist the opportunity. I grabbed a few things I had around the house, along with my branch clippers, and put together a really simple winter mantel…

The Old Painted Cottage - Winter Mantel

We have a beautiful magnolia tree that Adam’s dad had planted for us when we first moved in. You can see it from our kitchen window, where we can watch it bloom.

Here I snipped both fresh and dried magnolia tree clippings for the mantel “garland”…

My friend Rosemary made the #8 wreath for us a couple years back. And you can check out our handmade holiday wrapping paper tutorial here

The Old Painted Cottage - Winter Mantel

Antique books and bright citrus branches, deer sheds and silver cups, all nestled on top of a yard of burlap garland we used to wrap around our holiday tree a couple years ago…

I guess you could say I’m a bit unconventional when it comes to holiday decorating. Much of my design inspiration comes from nature and its beauty. I love using organic, natural woodland type elements…

And sometimes it’s all about the small details, such as these old handwritten papers someone thoughtfully placed in between the pages of these antique books, just the way I found them…
